Abstract Meta-structures broadly refer to structures that gain their properties from tailored geometry and material composition, rather than from the parent materials themselves. In the realm of mechanical waves, meta-structure encompasses acoustic metamaterials/metasurfaces, elastic metamaterials/metasurfaces, and phononic crystals. These artificial materials, though have vastly different design principles, all possess unique and useful properties not found in natural materials, opening up opportunities for the development of new devices for managing mechanical waves. In this talk, I will give an overview of our recent research on meta-structures, with a focus on our investigation of non-Hermitian acoustic metasurfaces and quantum-inspired phononic crystals, where we study the acoustical analogs of condensed matter physics. Specifically, I will touch on a new design paradigm that harness intrinsic losses of acoustic metasurfaces to enrich their physics and wave behaviors. I will then discuss the recent developments of phononic crystals, which serve as an intriguing platform for showcasing concepts originally developed in topological physics, including topological insulators, Moiré flat bands, and topological defects. I will conclude the presentation by offering some insights into the future of this burgeoning field in acoustics |
