Abstract

Prof. Chiang will talk about his professional and personal path, highlighting risks, successes, and failures he has experienced along the way in a presentation titled Materials Science, Electrochemistry and the Quest for Impact. In addition to being a member of the MIT faculty, Prof. Chiang is a successful entrepreneur who has launched six companies, with some focused on lithium-ion battery technology for electric vehicles. Several of his startups have gone on to remarkable commercial success.


Biography

Prof. Chiang is the Kyocera Professor in MIT's Department of Materials science and Engineering. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and a Fellow of the Materials Research Society and the American Ceramic Society. He is a recipient of the The Economist's Innovation Award (Energy and the Environment category), the Electrochemical Society's Battery Division's Battery Technology Award, the Materials Research Society's Plenary Lecturer, an R&D 100 and R&D100 Editor's Choice Award, and the American Ceramic Society's Corporate Achievement, Ross Coffin Purdy, R.M. Fulrath, and F.H. Norton Awards.
