Abstract

Mathematical models applying Monte Carlo methods to Radiation Processing applications have historically been underutilized. Typically, dosimeters measuring absorbed dose are irradiated to ensure sterility to medical devices and products. Recently, work has begun to document the many custom irradiation systems at STERIS and apply mathematical modeling to optimize processes, improve dose mapping of product, and assess variation sources involved in non-conformances. An overview of radiation processing and an in-depth look at the development and application of Monte Carlo methods will be discussed for this seminar.

Biography

Spencer Mickum is a highly skilled nuclear engineer and research scientist with over 10 years of simulation and modeling experience in the radiation industry. He completed his Doctorate degree in Nuclear Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, in close partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His accomplishments include detailed Monte Carlo studies using the LANL code MCNP, benchmark experimental studies, data processing and statistical analysis using the scripting language Python, and invention and optimization of software codes for processing results. He is President of the Council on Ionizing Radiation Measurements & Standards, chairman of the ANSI/HPS N43.7 committee, and a member of the ASTM E61 committee. He has been with STERIS AST since May 2022 and previously worked for Hopewell Designs.
