Abstract

This talk presents converging trends in advanced manufacturing creating a paradigm shift towards Industry 4.0. Specific research themes by Desai Research Group are delineated across different industry segments spanning from nano to mesoscale regimes. This includes a novel hybrid nanomanufacturing technology that involves the combination of a patented direct-write method (bottom-up) and nanoimprint lithography (top-down) to selectively fabricate nano and bio structures. Multiphysics phenomena are explored in nanoscale fluid-structural interaction and nanoimprinted material deformation using molecular dynamics modeling. Direct-write manufacturing is translated for the fabrication of flexible thin film transistors and solid oxide fuel cells. Hybrid additive manufacturing (3D printing) and characterization of functionally gradient materials via in situ laser curing is demonstrated. Further, a smart framework for cyber-based Design for Additive Manufacturing is developed that integrates artificial neural networks with Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for real-time predictions. Biomanufacturing holds great promise in the engineering of novel therapeutics, smart transplantable devices and regenerative organs. This research will also present the biomanufacturing of tunable coatings for orthopedic implants and cardiovascular stents. The effect of nanoscale topographies embedded with bone morphogenetic protein (BMP-2) growth factors for stem-cell based osteochondral tissue regeneration is investigated. Finally, physics and data-driven digital twin models are integrated for Biomanufacturing 4.0. The talk concludes with stimulating research themes by showcasing the Smart Manufacturing Hub at the Center of Excellence in Product Design and Advanced Manufacturing (CEPDAM).
