Although palladium and hydrogen form one of the simplest interstitial alloy systems one can think of, many aspects of this system are poorly understood. In particular, there is no satisfactory explanation for the hysteresis between the pressures required for absorption and desorption of hydrogen. We present a thermodynamic model for metal-hydrogen systems which explains the hysteresis and suggests a new Pd-H phase diagram.
Biography
Ricardo Schwarz is a Laboratory Fellow at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico. Before coming to Los Alamos in 1985, Ricardo worked at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign), Argonne National Laboratory, and Caltech. Ricardo’s recent work has addressed the synthesis and properties of bulk metallic glasses, the properties of hydrogen in metals, and the formation of 3He bubbles and swelling of tritated metals. He is a fellow of ASM and of TMS, and is member of the US Academy of Engineering.
