Abstract

The core of a nuclear reactor is a harsh operating environment, and the behavior of fuels and materials in an irradiation environment is extremely complex. This complexity currently limits full exploitation of nuclear fission as an energy source. It also provides a rich field for scientific investigation. Understanding of the complex nature of irradiation-driven phenomena in materials and fuels can only be obtained through a scientific program that includes experimental irradiation testing and post-irradiation examination (PIE). Joint development of nuclear energy science and technology by three major sectors—academia, the commercial nuclear power industry, and the federal government—is key to increasing scientific understanding and overcoming nuclear energy challenges. In response to these demands, the U.S. Department of Energy designated the Advanced Test Reactor a National Scientific User Facility (ATR NSUF). The mission of the ATR NSUF is to provide nuclear energy researchers access to world-class facilities, thereby facilitating the advancement of nuclear science and technology. This seminar will present several examples of irradiation materials science challenges, the tools available to address those challenges, and the ATR NSUF program that allows access to university-led teams for the conduct of irradiation experiments and post-irradiation examination.

Biography

Dr. Mitch Meyer is the Scientific Program Manager for the Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility at Idaho National Laboratory. He has worked in the area of nuclear fuel and material development at Argonne National Laboratory and INL and has broad experience in conducting irradiation test programs for development of new nuclear fuels and materials, including test design, fabrication, irradiation, and examination.
