Abstract

Two recent research topics on proton beam therapy will be discussed in this presentation. I will first discuss the development of a collimator-free spatially fractionated radiation treatment (SFRT) technique utilizing the proton scanning beam, the dosimetric characteristics, and the validation and implementation for patient treatments. The other topic relates to the ongoing research at Emory Proton Therapy Center on ultra-high dose rate (FLASH) proton irradiation experiments using Yucatan minipigs, aiming to determine the difference in spinal cord tolerance with FLASH and the conventional dose rate.


Biography

Mingyao Zhu, PhD, DABR, received her PhD in Physics from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. She completed her medical physics residency training at Harvard Medical Physics Residency Program in Boston Massachusetts. Dr. Zhu is an Assistant Professor of Medical Physics in the Department of Radiation Oncology, Emory University School of Medicine. Prior to joining Emory in 2020, Dr. Zhu was a medical physics faculty at Maryland Proton Treatment Center and served as interim director of proton physics in the Department of Radiation Oncology at University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Zhu holds professional memberships with American Society for Radiation Oncology and American Association of Physicists in Medicine. She published over 50 peer-reviewed papers and multiple patents. As a medical physicist at Emory Proton Therapy Center, Dr. Zhu is actively involved with all aspects of proton beam therapy. Her research interests focus on treatment planning, spatially fractionated proton therapy, and proton FLASH therapy.
