Abstract

Recent advancements in artificial intelligence foster the ground to address challenges in diverse but related critical areas of energy engineering with nuclear security being at the spotlight. The data generated in nuclear security applications increases exponentially due to the penetration of modern sensing and information technologies as well as their sensitive nature and the need for accurate and fast data processing and analysis. For instance, radiation levels are monitored round the clock by a variety of sensors aiming at predicting or diagnosing anomalies associated to terrorist activities. In such environments, the limitation of human operators to follow and interpret the huge volume of data offer opportunities for artificial intelligence analytics to enable smart sensing technologies by supporting effective and decision making. AI tools such as learning kernel machines and fuzzy logic have been successfully applied in nuclear security. For example, learning kernel machines are shown to accurately estimate the background radiation contribution, while fuzzy logic tools are used to analyze gamma-ray signals and identify threats by mimicking the human way of thinking. In this talk results from nuclear security applications will be presented and implications for future research of AI analytics as smart sensor enablers will be discussed.


Biography

Miltiadis Alamaniotis is an assistant professor in the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Prior to joining the University of Texas at San Antonio, he worked as research faculty in the school of Nuclear Engineering at Purdue University. He received the Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Thessaly in Greece, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Nuclear Engineering emphasizing on Applied Artificial Intelligence from Purdue University in 2010 and 2012 respectively. His interdisciplinary research focuses on the development of artificial intelligence systems for nuclear security, radiation detection, sensing systems, nuclear plant control and monitoring, and smart energy systems. He serves as an associate editor in the International journal on Artificial Intelligence Tools, as the co chair of the I&C Track in the Int. Conference on Nuclear Engineering since 2016, and served as the Program Chair of the IEEE International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence in 2018. In the past, he has been a visiting researcher with ANL and ORNL, and in 2017, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award of the ECE Department at University of Thessaly. He is an active member of the American Nuclear Society and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
