Abstract

With over 850,000 patients treated worldwide since its inception in 1968, Gamma Knife radiosurgery remains the gold standard for the treatment of a wide range of cranial malignancies. Recent advances in gamma knife technology, including on-board imaging and a rethinking of treatment delivery, have added additional options for clinicians, and challenges for medical physics. This presentation will provide an overview of the current state of the technology, a review of clinical cases, and a focus on the role that medical physicists play in GK radiosurgery treatment planning, delivery, and ongoing quality assurance. The most recent source reload of over 5,000 Ci at Emory St. Josephs Hospital will be discussed.
