Abstract

The SUMS reactor design was made as part of the senior design class for the nuclear and radiological engineering program at Georgia Tech. The full senior design team consisted of Alex England, Sam Heflin, MaryEmma Hughes, Marina Polegenko, and Luke Wells. The design is for a 315 MWth molten salt reactor that uses High-Assay, Low- Enriched (HALEU) UF4 dissolved in LiF-BeF2 (FLiBe) salt. As part of the project, the neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, chemistry, shielding, and economics were analyzed. The design was chosen as one of the two undergraduate student designs to be presented for the ANS Student Design Competition at the 2022 ANS Winter Meeting and Technology Expo.

Biography

Sam Heflin is a recent graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology and stayed to pursue his master’s degree in Nuclear and Radiological Engineering.
