Abstract

Digital manufacturing methods to connect industrial equipment have enabled information pathways to monitor operations and improve the manufacturing process through closed-loop feedback control. However, commercial CNC systems are often designed as open-loop systems, relying on static G-code instructions to produce components. While rudimentary control can be leveraged on commercial architectures, a need exists to develop open information pathways for process control. This seminar will discuss methods of process monitoring and feedback control with CNC hybrid manufacturing systems, where additive (deposition) and subtractive (machining) operations are contained within the same build volume. Information pathways on commercial systems will be evaluated, followed by a case study to design a next-generation robotic hybrid system from the ground up.


Biography

Dr. Kyle Saleeby is an R&D Staff Member in the Manufacturing Automation and Controls Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His research at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility investigates information pathways to connect manufacturing equipment and processes with secure Industry 4.0 technologies. His current focus centers on applications of data analytics for in-situ process monitoring and closed-loop control of hybrid manufacturing processes. Kyle received his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech.
