Abstract

Following a brief introduction of radiotherapy historical development, the presentation dives into the heart of treatment planning and optimization. With additional degrees of freedom, the optimization problem becomes increasingly complicated with increasing dosimetric benefits. A particularly important application is non coplanar radiotherapy. Benefit from solving a related optimization problem, image reconstruction can be accelerated for image guided radiotherapy. To more effectively use the images, automated segmentation has been developed. In addition to anatomical targeting, tumor radiobiology, as revealed by functional images, adds another dimension to radiotherapy. The combination of image acquisition, segmentation, biological targeting, and optimization leads to the future of personalized precision radiotherapy.

Biography

Dr. Ke Sheng received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 2004. His Ph.D. thesis was intensity-modulated CT for image guided radiation therapy. He was an assistant and associate professor at the University of Virginia before joining the University of California, Los Angeles in 2011. Dr. Sheng is currently a tenured professor and Associate Vice Chair of physics research in the Department of Radiation Oncology. His primary research interests include treatment planning optimization for X rays and particles, image reconstruction, registration, segmentation, and radiation instrumentation. Dr. Sheng is a board certified medical physicist and AAPM Fellow.
