Biography Johne M. Parker is the inaugural Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for the College of Engineering and an Associate Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Kentucky. She earned her BSME, MSME and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and has six years industry work experience with Shell Oil Company and Mobil Chemical Company. At UK, Dr. Parker received an NSF CAREER award as an Assistant Professor; her work has also been funded by industry and the Department of Education. After earning tenure at UK, Dr. Parker was selected as an AAAS/ASME Congressional Fellow and worked in the Office of Senator Byron Dorgan, D-ND, where she worked on several key issues, including establishing a Senate RFID ,radio frequency identification, Caucus to educate policymakers on the benefits and policy implications of that emerging technology. Her research interests are in the areas of systems and control, especially using wireless sensors including RFID to provide feedback, and enhancing the success of students underrepresented in STEM disciplines. Her funded broadening participation efforts include two Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, KY-WV LSAMP, grants and a current University of Kentucky Bridge to the Doctorate grant, she is also a member of the inaugural stEm PEER, Practitioners Enhancing Engineering Regionally, cohort funded by the Engineering PLUS INCLUDES Alliance headquartered at Northeastern University. |
