Abstract

By 2030, electricity demand is projected to increase 27 percent in the Southeast. Additionally, current and pending legislation and environmental standards are impacting electricity generation fueled by fossil fuels. We're planning the future of electricity generation that can maintain reliable and affordable supplies of electricity in the Southeast. Building new generating plants will be essential to meeting this goal. The most cost-effective, reliable and environmentally responsible fuel source today for large-scale, baseload generation of electricity is nuclear. Today, Southern Nuclear is expanding its fleet with two new units at Plant Vogtle near Waynesboro, GA. Vogtle Units 3 and 4 are moving through the licensing process and initial construction phases. Vogtle Units 3 and 4 will be among the first new nuclear units built in the U.S. in the last three decades. The presentation will provide an overview of Southern Nuclear and Plant Vogtle Units 3 and 4, the technology involved in the Westinghouse AP1000 and the challenges ahead in the design and operation of the new units.
