Abstract As part of a DOE funded demonstration project the Team is building an integrated system that includes electrolyzer, mobile fuel cell, fuel cell bucket truck and hydrogen storage that will be dispatched to provide value to utility operations, particularly with respect to grids that will have ever-increasing solar energy penetration. FSEC has conducted dynamic modeling and techno-economic analysis of this integrated system to demonstrate “stacked benefitsâ€, where multiple use cases are considered for an integrated system. These use cases include solar PV smoothing, mobile back-up power generation, load shifting/peak shaving, baseload PV power plants, and extended duration islanding of a commercial building and fueling of both EV and hydrogen vehicles at H2 and/or H2 Fed Fast Charger “Truck Stops.†|

Biography James M. Fenton is the director of the University of Central Florida’s Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) and a professor of Materials Science and Engineering. He leads more than 70 faculty and staff who research, develop, and evaluate clean energy technologies, and educate the current and future workforce about technology innovations. FSEC has seven major program areas – solar energy, high performance buildings, batteries/fuel cells/electrolyzers, decarbonization, electric transportation, STEM education and workforce training, and energy policy research. Dr. Fenton serves on the Governing Board of the Southeast Hydrogen Energy Alliance (https://seh2.energy/our-story/ ); and serves as the Vice-President of the Electrochemical Society and Chair of the ECS Sustainability Initiative (https://www.electrochem.org/james-m-fenton/ ). |
