Abstract

Brachytherapy has long been a cornerstone of localized radiation therapy, traditionally delivered through low-dose-rate or high dose rate methods. While these methods have proven effective in various oncological contexts, each comes with trade-offs in terms of radiation risk, treatment time, and effectiveness of DNA double strand damage. In this talk, Dr.Hoseon Lee will introduce a novel capsule design for brachytherapy: a remotely controllable radiation capsule designed to be opened and closed via inductive coupling. By using a small electromagnet, Lenz law and Faraday law is leveraged to control the opening and closing of the capsule to control the dose delivery. The talk will cover the underlying engineering principles, preliminary simulations, challenges, and potential of the new radiation capsule device for radiotherapy.

Biography

Dr. Hoseon Lee is an associate professor at Kennesaw State University. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His research interests are based on the application of electromagnetics to biomedical devices and environmental monitoring. For example, 3D microfluidic solenoids for magnetically tagged analyte detection, and remotely controlled radiation capsule design for localized, high dose rate brachytherapy. For environmental monitoring, Dr. Lee research is in the application of intelligent beam-steering array antennas for long-distance, low-power, low-cost water quality monitoring using LoRaWAN. His research has been documented in over 50 publications and has been cited over 1,000 times. Dr. Lee is also an affiliate faculty in the Georgia Tech School of Mechanical Engineering.
