Abstract The development of next-generation stretchable and flexible batteries is strongly motivated by tantalizing applications such as stretchable electronics, smart clothes, biomedical implants and devices, flexible display devices, among others. Flexible and stretchable lithium-ion batteries must provide stable energy while subjected to mechanical deformations such as stretching, bending, and twisting. Despite significant progress, stretchable lithium-ion batteries still face several persistent challenges. In this presentation, we will discuss the fabrication and characterization of flexible and stretchable all-solid lithium-ion batteries. We will present insights into the electro-chemo-mechanical performance and properties of the developed flexible/stretchable lithium-ion batteries, and in particular, discuss the science underpinning deformation and electrochemical performance of solid electrolytes—a vital component of stretchable and flexible batteries. |

Biography Dr. Haleh Ardebili is the Bill D. Cook Professor in Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Houston with a joint position in the Materials Science and Engineering Program. She is also the Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program at the Cullen College of Engineering. Ardebili received her B.S. Honors degree in Engineering Science and Mechanics from Pennsylvania State University (1994), M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University (1996), and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park (2001). Ardebili was a research scientist at General Electric R&D, and postdoctoral fellow at Rice University prior to joining the University of Houston as an assistant professor in 2010. She is a recipient of several awards including the NSF Career Award (2013), Texas Space Grant Consortium New Investigators Award (2014), Invention Fulcrum of Progress-General Electric Award (2003), Kittinger Teaching Excellence Award (2016), NASA iTECH Top Ten Finalist (2018), 50-in-5 Scholar Award (2020), Undergraduate Research Mentor Award (2021). She is a fellow of the Society of Engineering Science, associate editor of Journal of Applied Mechanics, and on the editorial board of ACS Applied Nanomaterials. Ardebili has authored 2 books and is a regular contributor to the NPR radio show, Engines of our Ingenuity where she has written and recorded 19 episodes so far. |
