Abstract

With the nuclear energy industry enjoying a second renaissance, utilities are focused on long term operation, aging management, efficiency improvements, and new ways to generate additional power. These objectives are accomplished by implementing online condition monitoring technologies and automation of maintenance activities in the existing fleet and deployment of a new generation of reactors to meet increasing electricity demands while protecting the environment. This presentation will review the latest trends in upgrading and maintenance of nuclear plant I&C systems and development and qualification of new process sensors for the next generation of reactors. Included in the presentation are examples of high technology research and development projects directed by the speaker to advance the state of the art in nuclear plant I&C systems. He will also speak about the launching of a nuclear engineering firm 45 years ago, less than 5 years after he immigrated to the United States.
