Abstract

With the nuclear energy industry enjoying a second renaissance, utilities are focused on long term operation, aging management, efficiency improvements, and new ways to generate additional power. These objectives are accomplished by implementing online condition monitoring technologies and automation of maintenance activities in the existing fleet and deployment of a new generation of reactors to meet increasing electricity demands while protecting the environment. This presentation will review the latest trends in upgrading and maintenance of nuclear plant I&C systems and development and qualification of new process sensors for the next generation of reactors. Included in the presentation are examples of high technology research and development projects directed by the speaker to advance the state of the art in nuclear plant I&C systems. He will also speak about the launching of a nuclear engineering firm 45 years ago, less than 5 years after he immigrated to the United States.

Biography

H.M. “HASH” HASHEMIAN co-founded AMS in 1977 and has grown the company to a global supplier of equipment, training, and services for maintenance of nuclear plant I&C systems. The company performs work in all nuclear power plants in the United States and many in Europe and Asia. He holds three doctorate degrees in engineering including a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, a Doctor of Engineering degree in electrical engineering, and a Ph.D. in computer engineering. He has worked for the nuclear and aerospace industries, and U.S. and international organizations including the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Electric Power Research Institute, International Atomic Energy Agency, International Electrotechnical Commission, and International Society of Automation. Dr. Hashemian is a Fellow of three professional societies including ANS, IEEE, and ISA. He has written three technical books on maintenance of nuclear plant I&C systems translated into four languages. He has directed nearly 50 million dollars in research & development projects over the last 30 years and has published the results in hundreds of conference papers and many journal articles.
