Abstract

Geisinger is an integrated health services organization widely recognized for its innovative use of the electronic health record (EHR), and the development and implementation of innovative care models including ProvenCare® (warranty) program and ProvenHealth NavigatorSM (advanced medical home). The system serves more than 2.3 million residents throughout 42 counties in central and northeastern Pennsylvania. Geisinger was an early adopter of the EHR, having partnered with Epic Systems since 1995. Although information technology is conceptualized as a critical component in delivering high quality/high value care, very little proof exists. Geisinger Health System has advanced its primary strategic goals by innovating how we care for our sickest hospital and community based patients by eliminating unnecessary and often times hurtful services, and by providing as much care as we can near where our patients live. Without the availability of near real-time data and dissemination of information throughout our widespread geographic markets, this care reengineering could not be accomplished Geisinger continues to be a national leader in information technology because it enables us to develop new solutions to create value and meaningful improvement in outcomes recognized both by our patients and our providers.
