Abstract

I will describe structure-function relationships in load-bearing fi ber-reinforced tissues and joints, and the associated changes that occur during development, with degeneration and injury, and following therapeutic intervention. I will primarily focus on our work determining mechanical factors that contribute to the pathogenesis and progression of intervertebral disc degeneration, although I will also present structure-function of other musculoskeletal fi brocartilages and of tissue engineered constructs. Throughout, I will describe our work to develop and apply innovative, cutting edge technologies, including novel mechanical tests, rigorous mathematical models, and state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging and analyses to study the disc.
