Abstract

Sorption systems promise to address energy storage, water harvesting, carbon capture, drying and other applications in energy and sustainability. To address the increasing demands of potable water, freshwater treatment, and clean energy production, furthering fundamental understanding of the transport phenomena and surface modification remains essential despite immense progress made in the field. In this talk, I will present our recent advances in understanding interfacial transport phenomena in sorbent coatings and the resulting broad applications at the energy water carbon nexus. In the first part, I will discuss a generalized framework to develop sorbent coatings with superior kinetics. Then, I will demonstrate how the enhanced understanding of heat and mass transport phenomena enables promising applications in energy and water. I will discuss our recent work on high performance portable atmospheric water harvesting device for extreme arid climates. By leveraging innovations on the material level and in interfacial heat and mass transport, this enables pathways towards a more sustainable future.


Biography

Dr. Bachir El Fil is a Research Scientist in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Bachir earned his B.S and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the American University of Beirut (AUB) in 2014 and 2015, respectively and his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2021. His research focuses on fundamental understanding of transport phenomena to create innovative solutions in renewable energy systems, water harvesting, carbon capture, and thermal management. His Ph.D. work focused on developing waste heat recovery and thermal storage solutions for drying applications. He was the receipt of the Georgia Tech 2022 Sigma Xi Best Ph.D. Thesis Award.
