Abstract

Image guided radiation therapy IGRT is an important tool in improving the effectiveness of clinical radiation oncology. IGRT involves the use of patient images to localize and reposition the patient prior to treatment to ensure that the therapeutic beam is correctly directed toward the target. IGRT has been most commonly facilitated using Xrays, beginning with use of Megavoltage(MV) portal images in the past. These images provide a means of evaluating the position of the treatment isocenter and field edges relative to the patient position. But these images have poor low contrast resolution. One solution to improve soft tissue targeting is through in room kilo voltage imaging systems. Such systems have included CT on rails and kV imaging systems affixed to the floor ceiling or to the linear accelerator gantry itself. The goal of this presentation is to define the minimum acceptable practice standards for the commissioning and quality assurance of Xray based image guidance systems utilized in radiotherapy.

Biography

I have 12 years experience as a clinical Medical Physicist. I have a Bachelors degree in Electrical and Electronics engineering from India. I have a Master’s degree in Physics from University of Texas at Arlington and a Masters degree in Medical Physics from Georgia Tech. After completing my MSMP from Tech, I started working as a Junior Medical Physicist in a clinic in West Virginia. After finishing my board exams, I moved to California and worked at Loma Linda University Medical Center in their Proton Therapy department. After staying at LLUMC for 7 years I moved back to Georgia and currently I am at Piedmont Healthcare in Newnan, GA. I taught physics to Radiation Oncology residents, dosimetrists and Radiation therapists and I continue to enjoy teaching. I also enjoy working on projects which add value to clinical medical physics. Outside of work, I enjoy CrossFit style workouts and I like to participate in Obstacle course racing. My wife and 2 kids are very supportive of my lifestyle!
