SUMMARY

With the goal of Smart Manufacturing (SM) and Industry 4.0, development and integration of secured Internet of Things and cyber-physical systems are crucial. In SM, sensors, platforms, and services need to securely connect to internet and communicate with one another in a standard language in order to increase the production and efficiency of the system. The goal of this work is to demonstrate an approach for development of a platform that performs high frequency data acquisition from machines and sensors, processes the collected data, and securely interacts with Internet and web Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for cloud computing and web interactions. The proposed platform consists of two separate sections providing a Local Area Network and an Internet Area Network (IAN). The LAN communicates with machines via MTConnect, performs fog computations, and transfers the data to the IAN. The IAN section receives the data from LAN while acquiring high frequency data from sensors. The platform then communicates with internet-connected devices and web APIs for different tasks such as inserting data to a database, providing data for web apps or smartphone apps, sending text messages / emails / notifications to a device, and communicating with web services such as Google Clouds, Amazon Web Services, IFTTT, and Particle Clouds.
